Colt’s Birth Story
We are approaching three months as a family of four, and in this quiet little window—my mom watching my toddler, baby napping—I wanted to finally sit down and write out Colt’s birth story while it’s still fresh on my heart.
Colt was due in early November, and his due date came and went. Honestly, my body felt good and I could’ve stayed pregnant a bit longer, but my heart was starting to feel anxious. I just wanted my baby here, safe in my arms. Since I had preeclampsia during my delivery with Luke, my OB recommended that we not go past 41 weeks. After lots of prayer and conversation, we decided to schedule an induction at 40 weeks and 5 days.
A couple of nights before the induction, I started having contractions—very similar to how things began with Luke. The first night they were super mild, the second night they picked up a little more, and then by morning… nothing.
On induction day, Jake and I headed to the hospital around 8am. I’ll be honest—I felt a little uneasy about being induced. I would’ve loved to go into labor naturally, but more than anything, I trusted the Lord and our doctor and kept my focus on bringing our baby into the world safely. Since my first induction went well, we followed a similar plan with Colt. When we arrived, I wasn’t dilated at all. We started with a low dose of Cytotec around 9am and continued doses every few hours throughout the day.
Progress was slow. I had a few contractions here and there, but nothing consistent or strong, and by afternoon I was feeling pretty discouraged. Jake and I were also very bored—just hanging out in the hospital room wondering when things would actually start. I received my final dose around 4:30pm, and by 5–5:30pm things finally started to pick up. Praise the Lord—finally.
From that point on, things moved fast. Contractions became strong and consistent, and by 7:30pm I received my epidural and was about 5cm dilated. It brought some relief, though I still felt a lot of pressure. After my water was broken, things intensified even more. Colt’s heart rate dropped a bit during contractions, which had me worried, but the nurses were so calm and reassuring. They explained that this can happen as babies move through the birth canal and adjusted my position, which helped immediately. They called the OB and let us know baby would be here soon.
By 8:55pm, I was fully dilated and ready to push. Even now, writing this, I’m tearing up thinking about that moment. There is truly nothing like it—it feels like heaven on earth. The room was ready, everyone was excited, and the anticipation was overwhelming in the best way. The OB who delivered Colt is a friend from our church, and it felt like such a sweet, ordained moment—another reminder of how present the Lord was throughout the entire experience.
Colt was born at 9:04pm, and just like that, our hearts grew a million sizes.
I’m so incredibly grateful to have had two positive birth experiences. Both times, I felt deeply cared for—by the Lord, by my husband, and by the amazing doctors and nurses around us. Jake was by my side the entire time, holding my hand, encouraging me, and once again helping deliver our baby (we can trust his hands… he’s snapped a few balls in his life 😉). If you’ve ever delivered a baby, you know how vital L&D nurses are—the ones who walk with you through the hardest and holiest moments. We were truly blessed with the best care.
Colt has been the sweetest addition to our family. He is such a happy, content baby, and we are all completely smitten—especially big brother Luke. Thank you, Lord, for another healthy, happy baby boy. This mama’s heart—and home—are so full.
